Dies sind unsere beiden Neuen: Leo und Sunny. Leider gab meine Kamera nach diesem Foto ganz ihren Geist auf ... eines weiteres Opfer des Wyomingschen Staubs. Jetzt ist Schluss: Ich werde eine Sportcamera bestellen, die haben zwar wenig Zoom, ueberleben aber hoffentlich laenger.

These are our two new ones: Leo and Sunny. Unfortunately my camera died after this photo ... another victim of Wyoming's dust. This is it: I am going to order a sports camera, they have less zoom but will hopefully live longer.

Um wieder zum Thema zu kommen: Freitag morgen brachen Nick und ich auf, um unseren alten Whirlpool in die Stadt zu bringen und den neuen abzuholen. Wir wollten uns auch ein paar Pferde anschauen, aber der Besitzer hatte sie uns vollkommen falsch beschrieben ... sie waren praktisch wild. Dann ging es weiter nach Rapid City zur Blackhills Viehschau, wo - ganz zufaellig - eine Pferdeauktion stattfand.

To get back to the topic: Friday morning Nick and I left to bring our old hot tub to town and pick up the new one. We also wanted to look at some horses but the owner had not described them accurately ... they were practically wild. After that we went on to Rapid City to the Black Hills Stock Show where - just accidentally - a horse sale took place.

Als ein grosser 10-jaehriger Rappwallach in die Arena geritten wurde, konnte Nick nicht widerstehen. Und damit waren wir Besitzer von Leo. Da wir keinen Trailer dabei hatten (nur den flachen fuer den Whirlpool), mussten wir am Samstag wieder nach Rapid City aufbrechen, wo der zweite Tag der Pferdeauktion stattfand und ich bei einer ebenfalls grossen 7-jaehrigen Palominostute nicht nein sagen konnte, womit nun auch Sunny zur Familie gehoert.

When a big 10 year old black gelding was ridden into the arena, Nick could not resist anymore. And thus we became owners of Leo. Since we did not bring a horse trailer (just the flat trailer for the hot tub), we had to go to town again on Saturday, the second day of the horse sale. Now I could not say no to a big 7 year old Palomino mare. And thus Sunny has become a member of the family as well.

Bei dieser fuer diese Gegend hoeherwertigen Auktion gab es eine Menge Pferde, die wir gern gekauft haetten, aber die meisten wollten oder konnten wir uns nicht leisten. Ab einem gewissen Preis mag man sein Pferd schon gar nicht mehr auf die Koppel zu den anderen Pferden stellen, weil ja was passieren koennte.

At this auction which was rather high class for this area, there were a lot of nice horses which we would have liked to buy but we either did not want to or could not afford them. At a certain price you don't even dare to put your horse out with the herd anymore since somthing could happen.

Am Sonntag haben wir bei beiden Pferden gleich die Eisen gezogen, weil sie furchtbar auf dem Eis rutschten. Naechste Woche werden wir sie mal ausprobieren und reiten.

On Sunday we pulled the shoes on both horses because they were sliding terribly on the ice. Next week we will try them out and ride them.

Uebrigens: Ich habe von einigen eine Facebook-Einladung bekommen, aber ich habe schlicht und einfach keine Zeit fuer Facebook. Ist also nicht persoenlich gemeint.

Schlitterpartie / Slippery slopes

Heike, Charlie und/and Daisy

Nach Wochen am Schreibtisch war ich gestern endlich mal wieder reiten. Heike kam mit ihrem neuen Pferd Charlie vorbei, dem sie dann auch gleich unsere Tiermenagerie vorstellte. Vor den Gaensen hatte er mehr Angst als vor Bueffel Daisy ... denn das ist ja eh nur eine dumme Kuh ;-) Frost meinte, sich losreissen und bocken zu muessen, war dann beim Reiten aber wieder brav.

After weeks at the desk, I finally went riding again yesterday. Heike brought her new horse Charlie along who met all of our different critters right away. He was more scared of the geese than of buffalo Daisy ... that's just a dumb cow anyway ;-) Frost thought he needed to break away and buck but was all calm again when being ridden.

Der staendige Wechsel zwischen kaltem und mildem Wetter hat dazu gefuehrt, dass sich unter dem Schnee (soweit noch vorhanden) eine solide Eisschicht gebildet hat. Als wenn das nicht schon schlimm genug waere, schmilzt das Eis in der Sonne und mischt sich mit dem nassen Lehm ... wie Schmierseife.

The constant change between cold and mild weather created a solid layer of ice beneath the snow (as far as there is any left). And if that wasn't already bad enough, the ice is melting in the sun and mixes with the wet clay ... it's like riding on soap.

Nachdem sich Heike mit Charlie hingelegt hat, bin ich vorsichtshalber auch von Frost abgestiegen. Wir sind dann spaeter wieder geritten, aber nur im Schritt. Fuer den kommenden Fotoworkshop sehe ich momentan schwarz, aber noch sind es ja noch 2 Wochen hin.

After Heike fell with Charlie, I got off Frost as well for safety reasons. We rode again later but just in a walk. No good prospects for the photo workshop but we still have 2 weeks to go.

Nachmittags haben Nick und ich den alten Whirlpool aufgeladen. Er tat zwar noch seinen Dienst, aber die Wartung war sehr aufwendig geworden. Morgen holen wir hoffentlich den neuen ab. Dann gehts auch zur Blackhills Viehshow in Rapid City.

In the afternoon Nick and I loaded the old hot tub. It was still working but maintenance was getting more time-intensive and expensive. Tomorrow we will pick up the new hot tub. And also visit the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City.

Unsere Jaehrlingsochsen haben wir mittlerweile auch gekauft, sie werden aber noch im Feedlot gemaestet, bis das Gras anfaengt zu wachsen, sprich bis Mitte Mai.

We also bought our yearling steers. They will stay in the feedlot, though till the grass starts growing, that is till mid May.

Bordercollie Penny klaefft gern, hier draussen beschweren sich ja zum Glueck keine Nachbarn ... aber Labrador Gauge scheint beunruhigt zu sein, denn er faengt dann immer an zu heulen wie ein Coyote. Nick und ich muessen lachen ueber unseren seelenvollen Hund.

Bordercollie Penny barks a lot. Good luck there are no neighbors here to complain ... but Labrador Gauge must be concerned because he always starts to howl like a coyote. Nick and I always have to laugh about our soulful dog.

Nun ist es auch bei uns kalt geworden. Eigentlich wollten Nick und ich diese Woche unsere Rinder fuer den naechsten Sommer kaufen, aber der Verkaeufer moechte warten, bis es wieder waermer wird, weil dann die Rinder wieder mehr wiegen und er mehr Geld bekommt. Montag soll es endlich soweit sein ...

Now it has become cold here as well. Nick and I wanted to go to town this week to buy cattle for the next summer but the seller wants to wait till it gets warmer again because his cattle will weigh more then and he'll make more money. Hopefully we get to go on Monday ...

Nick und ich verbringen die Morgende mit Fuettern und anderen Aussenarbeiten, nachmittags ist Bueroarbeit angesagt. Keine Hoehen, keine Tiefen ;-)

Nick and I spend the mornings outside feeding and doing chores, the afternoons doing office work. No highs, no lows ;-)

Ich melde mich, wenn es wieder mehr zu berichten gibt.

I will write again when there is something to write about.

Winter?

Jetzt ist es doch kalt geworden. Wir haben angefangen, die Rinder, die teilweise noch Kaelber saeugen und/oder traechtig sind, mit Heu zu fuettern. Am Fuss des Seedammes, wo sie die Erde fest treten sollen. Keine Sorge: Zum Fruehling hin werden wir wieder ein paar Hundert Rinder mehr auf der Ranch haben.

Is has gotten cold. We started to feed hay to the cattle who are partly still nursing calves and/or are pregnant. At the foot of the lake dam where they are supposed to compact the soil. Don't worry: In spring we will have a few hundred more heads of cattle on the ranch.

Nick ist mittlerweile wieder da. Wir haben immer noch viel Bueroarbeit zu erledigen, aber demnaechst wird auch wieder gebaut. Tav hat heute angerufen, er will ab Februar wieder da sein. Rechtzeitig zum Cowboy-Winter-Fotoworkshop.

Nick is back home. We still have plenty of office work to do but will soon start building again. Tav called today and said he'd be back by February. Just in time for the cowboy winter photo workshop.

Brandy und Brandon arbeiten diesen Winter wieder in Harlowton, Montana. Im Fruehjahr werden sie dann voraussichtlich wieder Rinder in der Praerie Sued-Dakotas managen.

Brandy and Brandon are working in Harlowton, Montana again this winter. In spring they will probably manage cattle in the South Dakota prairie again.

Ein Samstag auf dem Lande / A Saturday in the country

Chocolate fragt sich, wo die anderen sind / Chocolate wonders where the others are

Nick und seine Mutter sind seit Dienstag in Nebraska, wo ein Verwandter gestorben ist. Ich bin allein auf der Ranch. Freitag abend sind Heike und ich nach Spearfish gefahren, um uns "War Horse" von Steven Spielberg anzuschauen (leider nicht sehr empfehlenswert). Als ich zurueckkam, haben Gauge, Penny, Trouble (die Hauskatze) und ich uns noch mit Parelli beschaeftigt. Naja, ich jedenfalls ... habe von Nick die neuesten DVDs zum Thema "Fohlen starten" zu Weihnachten bekommen. Samstag morgen wollte ich ausschlafen ...

Nick and his mother have been in Nebraska since Tuesday. A relative died. I am alone on the ranch. Friday evening Heike and I drove to Spearfish to watch "War Horse" by Steven Spielberg (unfortunately not that great). When I came home, Gauge, Penny, Trouble (the house cat) and I dealt with Parelli. Well, I at least ... Nick gave me Parelli's newest DVDs about "colt starting" for Christmas. Saturday morning I wanted to sleep in ...

Pustekuchen ... um 6 Uhr rief der erste potenzielle Heukaeufer an, dann jemand aus Georgia, der einen Job suchte, dann ein Jaeger, der eine Truthahnjagd buchen wollte ... ich bin dann lieber zu den Pferden gefahren. Eigentlich sollte ich nicht allein auf dem Quad unterwegs sein, wenn sonst keiner da ist. Ich koennte verungluecken, nachts erfrieren, zum Dessert eines Loewen werden etc. ... man lasse seine Phantasie spielen. Gerade letzte Woche hat sich mein Quad in einem Erdrutschgebiet ueberschlagen (ohne mich), und Nick musste die Windschutzscheibe flicken.

No kidding ... at 6 am the first potential hay buyer called, then someone from Georgia looking for a job, then a hunter who wanted to book a turkey hunt ... I left to drive out to the horses. I should not do that when I am alone. I could have an accident, freeze during the night, become a lion's dessert etc. ... there are no limits to one's imagination. Just last week my ATV rolled over in a landslide area (without me) and Nick had to fix the windshield.

Nach einer Viertelstunde hatte ich die Pferde entdeckt. Doch eines fehlte. Nach Minuten der Panik, in denen ich in den Canyon fuhr, von Bueffel Daisy gejagt wurde (Nick meint, sie will nur spielen) und schon der Verzweiflung nahe war, fiel mir ein, dass Indy ja bei Heike ist.

After 15 minutes I found the horses. But one was missing. After minutes of panic during which I drove down into the canyon, was chased by buffalo Daisy (Nick thinks, she is just playing) and was close to desperation, it dawned on me that Heike had taken Indy to her place.

Die Nacht war kalt gewesen, aber Samstagmorgen war windstill und sonnig. Ich setzte mich zwischen die Pferde, die alle einmal hallo sagten (Esel Cisco lag halb auf meinem Schoss, weil ich seine juckenden Ohren kratzen sollte), und schloss die Augen. Stille, Grasrupfen, ein Schnauben hier, ein Gaehnen dort und tiefes Seufzen. Pferde koennen auch geniessen.

The night had been cold but Saturday morning was calm and sunny. I sat between the horses who all said hallo (donkey Cisco lay half on my lap so that I could scratch his itchy ears) and closed my eyes. Gras being eaten, snorting, yawning and deep sighs. Horses also know how to enjoy life.

Den Rest des Tages habe ich mit Arbeit verbracht, aber ich freue mich schon auf heute abend: Der neue Gefluegelkatalog ist da. Im April werde ich wieder Huehnerkueken bestellen ... eventuell auch Enten und Gaense. Mal sehn. Ich hoffe, Nick kann nicht zaehlen ;-)

The rest of the day I worked. But I am looking forward to tonite: The new poultry catalog has arrived. In April I will order chicks again ... and maybe some ducklings and goslings. We'll see. Hope Nick cannot count ;-)

Mit Schuessen ins neue Jahr / With gun shots into the new year

Tontaubenschiessen / trap shooting

Silvestermorgen lagen gut fuenf Zentimeter Neuschnee. Waehrend Nick den Teich von Schnee raeumte und die Tontaubenschiessanlage aufstellte, habe ich die Lodge geputzt und gekocht. Am fruehen Nachmittag kamen um die 50 Nachbarn (eine Stunde entfernt zaehlt noch als Nachbarschaft), um zu schiessen, Schlittschuh zu laufen, Eishockey zu spielen und am Abend in der Lodge zu sitzen und zu essen.

On the morning of New Year's Eve there were more than two inches of new snow. While Nick plowed his pond and took care of his trap shoot machine, I cleaned the lodge and cooked. Early afternoon about 50 neighbors (one hour away is still neighborhood) came to shoot trap, skate, play ice hockey and spend the evening in the lodge and eat.

Natuerlich haben die Frauen, wie das hier so ueblich ist, auch etwas zum Essen mitgebracht, sonst waere ich etwas ueberfordert gewesen. Trotzdem habe ich es leider nicht geschafft, Fotos vom Feuer am Teich und dem Eishockeyspiel zu machen. Geknallt wird hier auf dem Lande nur zum 4. Juli, dem Unabhaengigkeitstag, aber nicht zu Silvester. Dafuer hallten Gewehrschuesse durchs Tal. Ein schoener Abend.

As it is custom out here, the women brought food as well. Otherwise I would have been slightly stressed. I still did not manage to take photos of the fire at the pond and the ice hockey match. Here in the country people don't do fireworks for New Year's, just for July 4 (Independence Day). Instead gunshots echoed through the canyons. A fun evening.

Pferde in der Daemmerung / Horses at dusk

Heute habe ich die Pferde reingeholt, weil wir Hufe trimmen wollten. Vorher habe ich die Schafe zusammengetrieben, die wir entwurmen und impfen wollten - leider fehlten zwei, sie sind wahrscheinlich gefressen worden. Nick hat vom Nachbarn einen Schafbock ausgeliehen, den wir unseren wolligen Damen heute vorgestellt haben.

Today I moved the horses in because we wanted to trim hooves. Before that, I gathered the sheep which we wanted to worm and vaccinate - unfortunately two were missing, they were probably killed by predators. Nick fetched a sheep buck from one of the neighbors and introduced the ram to our wooly ladies today.

Heike kam, um Mac (ihr verletztes Pferd) abzuholen. Natuerlich durfte sie gleich helfen. Und als sie nach Hause fuhr, hatte sie nicht nur Mac dabei, sondern auch eine heimatlose Katze und Indy, unser "Indianerpony". Zum Einen braucht sie gerade ein Reitpferd - Mac ist noch nicht wieder reitbar, und ihre anderen Pferde sind alle zu jung, zum Anderen scheint Indy eine Vergiftung zu haben: Ihm sind Schweif- und Maehnenhaar ausgefallen (keine Parasiten) ... Heike hat das schon einmal mit ihrem Pferd Foxi erlebt, als er auf einer anderen Ranch graste. Insofern ist Indy auf Heikes Koppel momentan sicher besser aufgehoben. Den anderen Pferden geht es allen gut.

Heike came to pick up Mac (her injured horse). She was welcome to help, of course. And when she left for home, she did not just take Mac but also a homeless cat and Indy, our "Indian pony". She needs a riding horse - Mac ist not rideable, yet and her other horses are too young. And in addition to that Indy seems to suffer from some poisoning: He lost all his tail and mane hair (no parasites) ... Heike had seen this before on her horse Foxy when he grazed on a different ranch. So Indy seems to be safer on Heike's pasture at the moment. The other horses are doing fine.

Was meint Ihr? Ich halte Chester (das Fohlen) an der Ranch (zusammen mit Frost, der etwas duenn geworden ist), um ihn fuettern zu koennen, aber natuerlich bewegt er sich nicht viel (warum auch). Ist das besser so, oder soll ich ihn mit der Herde laufen lassen, was besser fuer seine Hufe und Muskeln waere? Dann bekommt er aber nur Wintergras zu fressen, das nicht sehr proteinhaltig ist.

What is your opinion? I keep Chester (the colt) close to the ranch (together with Frost who got a bit skinny) in order to feed him but he does not move much (why should he). Is this preferable or should I let him run with the herd which would be better for his hooves and muscles? But then he would only get to graze winter grass which does not contain much protein.

Noch einmal zum Thema Huehner: Als ich eines Abends in den Huehnerstall kam, um die Tueren zu schliessen, herrschte eine Heiden-Aufregung. Ploetzlich sah ich die Ursache: einen Luchs. Das arme Tier war aber halb gelaehmt und zog die voellig verkuemmerten Hinterbeine nach sich. Er waere nie tasgueber in die Naehe von Menschen gekommen, wenn er nicht sehr hungrig gewesen waere. Nick hat ihn erschossen, er haette den Winter eh nicht ueberlebt ... ausser in unserem Huehnerstall.

And the chickens again: When I came into the chicken shed one evening to close the doors, there was quite a bit of excitement. Sudenly I saw the cause: a bob cat. The poor animal was half paralysed and pulled his degenerated hind legs after him. He would never have come so close to humans in daylight if he had not been very hungry. Nick had to shoot him, he would not have survived the winter ... other than in our chicken shed.

Action auf dem Eis / Action on the ice

Fuer heute hatte Nick unsere Nachbarn Jared und Sarah sowie Earl und Cori mit ihren insgesamt 9 (!) Kindern zum Schlittschuhlaufen eingeladen. Nick hat dafuer den Schnee auf dem Teich hinter unserem Haus geraeumt und Wasser auf die Eisflaeche laufen lassen, die einigermassen glatt gefror. Wir hatten viel Spass.

Nick invited our neighbors Jared and Sarah as well as Earl and Cori with their altogether 9 (!) kids for ice-skating. Nick had plowed the snow off the pond behind our house and let water run onto it which had frozen pretty smooth. We had lots of fun.

Beim Eishockeyspiel standen Sarah und Cori im Tor, Nick, Jared, Seely, Akayla, Seth, Grant, Malachai und Levi spielten. Earl passte auf die beiden Kleinen, Hannah und Elena, auf, waehrend Baby Titus bei JoAnn im Haus geblieben war. Ach ja, Gauge versuchte, den Puck zu erwischen, vergass aber dabei immer die laengere Bremsstrecke auf glattem Eis. Penny war schlauer und blieb am Rande des Sees sitzen.

During the ice hockey match Sarah and Cori stood in the goals, Nick, Jared, Seely, Akayla, Seth, Grant, Malachai and Levi played and Earl took care of the little ones, Hannah and Elena, while baby Titus stayed with JoAnn in the house. Gauge tried the catch the puck but always forgot that it takes much longer to stop on ice than on normal ground. Penny was smarter and stayed at the shore.

Weihnachten kommt wie immer ueberraschend ... eigentlich wollten Nick und ich endlich mal ein richtiges Weihnachtsfoto machen ... machen wir dann naechstes Jahr ;-)

Christmas as usual comes as a surprise ... Nick and I wanted to get a real Christmas picture taken ... well, we'll do it next year ;-)

Das Baby auf dem Foto unten ist Lasse. Lasse ist Schleswig-Holsteiner. Seine Eltern, Maike und Gilbert, wollten eigentlich im vergangenen Mai zum dritten Mal Urlaub auf New Haven machen, aber dann kam Lasse ... und wie man auf dem Foto sieht, wird er sicher zuerst reiten lernen bevor er laeuft.

The baby on the picture below is Lasse. Lasse is from Schleswig-Holstein (Germany). His parents, Maike and Gilbert, wanted to come last May for their third vacation on New Haven but then Lasse came ... and as you can see on the photo, Lasse will very likely ride a horse before he walks.

Der Schnee schmilzt langsam dahin, nur in den Taelern bleibt er liegen, aber heute soll es wieder schneien. Gestern war ich auf dem Quad unterwegs, um mal wieder nach unseren Pferden zu suchen. Eigentlich sollte das bei fast 40 Tieren einfach sein, aber auf unserer bewaldeten huegeligen Ranch verlieren sie sich doch ... insbesondere, da Chica und Ginger die Herde mal wieder unter sich aufgeteilt haben. Stuten!

The snow is melting, just the canyons stay white. But today it is supposed to snow again. Yesterday I took the ATV to look for the horses. Close to 40 animals should be easy to find but on this hilly wooded ranch they are not ... especially since Chica and Ginger seperated the herd again. Mares!

Die Pferde haben diesen Winter noch kein Heu bekommen und sehen (wie die Fotos unten zeigen) trotzdem noch wohlgenaehrt aus. Sogar Monster wie Poncho und Leftie sind rund ... erstaunlich, wie gut Pferde an ihre Umgebung angepasst sind.

The horses have not been fed hay, yet this winter but still look (as the photos below show) fat. Even monsters like Poncho and Leftie are round ... amazing how horses adjust to their environment.

Kalb Ruby macht sich auch. Dank Medizin kann sie auf einem Auge wieder etwas sehen. Sie wird langsam zahm. Mit Fohlen Chester arbeite ich momentan am Respekt, denn Vertrauen hat er genug ... die Balance ist wichtig.

Calf Ruby is doing better. Thanks to meds she can see a little again on one eye. She is slowly becoming tame. Colt Chester needs to learn more respect. He's already very trusting but there needs to be a balance.

Und was die Huehner angeht: Es ist wohl von allem etwas. Einige Huehner sind schon aelter, einige noch recht jung, einige in der Mauser ... und dann der Winter. Nick wird eine Leuchte in den Huehnerstall haengen, damit sie mehr Licht haben ... vielleicht gibt es dann auch wieder mehr Eier. Vielen Dank fuer all die hilfreichen Emails zum Thema!

And the chickens: It must be different things. Some chickens are older, some younger, some are still molting. And then the winter. Nick will put up a special light in the chicken shed ... so maybe we'll get more eggs soon. Thanks a lot for your helpful emails!

Am Mittwoch haben wir unserem Nachbarn Ken geholfen, seine Kaelber zu impfen, zu entwurmen und zu kastrieren. Manche Rancher schneiden die Hoden ab (was vermutlich fuer den Moment schmerzhafter ist, aber schneller heilt), andere binden die Hoden ab (was nicht blutig, dafuer aber ueber laengere Zeit schmerzhaft ist). So oder so: Als Ochsen leben die Kaelber mit ihren Artgenossen unter freiem Himmel, bevor sie im Alter von eineinhalb bis zwei Jahren geschlachtet werden.

On Wednesday we helped our neighbor Ken to vaccinate, worm and castrate his calves. Some ranchers cut the testicles (which probably hurts more but heals faster), others band them (less bloody but painful for a longer time). Either way: As steers the calves will live together with their buddies under the open sky before they are butchered at the age of one and a half to two years.

Ken schenkte uns ein kleines fast blindes Kalb, die wir Ruby nennen. Sie ist ohne Mutter aufgewachsen und wird nur mit extra Pflege ueberleben.

Ken gave us a small almost blind calf who we named Ruby. She grew up without a mother and will only survive with extra care.

Waehrend es am Mittwoch schneite, war es Donnerstag wieder schoen. Brandy und ich brachen mit Kindern, Hunden und Fohlen Chester zum Spaziergang auf. Fuer Chester, der hin und wieder mal davonbuckeln wollte (aber dank 7-Meter Parelli-Strick nicht konnte), ist Spazierengehen eine gute Uebung. Sein Buddy Mac wieherte die ganze Zeit im Korral, dabei ist er ein erwachsenes Pferd und sollte mit gutem Beispiel vorangehen *tsss*

While it snowed on Wednesday, Thursday was beautiful again. Brandy and I took the kids, dogs and colt Chester for a walk. For Chester who once in a while wanted to buck away (but could not due to a 22-ft Parelli rope) walking with us is good training. His buddy Mac was whinnying in the corral even though he is an adult horse and should be a good example for Chester *tsss*

Meine Katze Trouble will ich gar nicht erwaehnen. Waehrend sie ihren Schoenheitsschlaf geniesst, lachen sich die Maeuse ins Faeustchen.

And I don't even want to mention our cat Trouble. While she is enjoying her beauty sleep, the mice are giggling their heads off.

Was macht Nick ohne Sattel auf Tinkerbelle? / What is Nick doing without a saddle on Tinkerbelle?

An diesem wunderschoenen milden Winterwochenende entschlossen Nick und ich uns, mal nicht zu arbeiten. Am Samstag fanden wir den zweiten Teil unserer Pferdeherde ... ebenfalls beim Nachbarn. Heike, die demnaechst fuer zwei Wochen nach Deutschland fliegen will, rief an: Ob sie uns Mac, ihren grossen Paint-Wallach, vorbeibringen koenne ... er habe sich bei einem ihrer letzten Ritte am Huf verletzt und braucht noch einen taeglichen Verbandswechsel.

On this beautiful mild winter weekend Nick and I decided not to work for a change. On Saturday we found the second part of our horse herd ... also on the neighbor's. Heike, who is planning on going to Germany for two weeks, called: If she could drop off Mac, her big Paint gelding ... he hurt his hoof during one of their last rides and still needs to be treated daily.

Da Nick und ich in den Wochen bis Weihnachten noch etliche liegengebliebene Projekte beenden wollen, werden wir kaum zum Reiten kommen. Fohlen Chester kann momentan nicht mit der Herde laufen, weil das Wintergras nicht genuegend Naehrstoffe fuer ein heranwachsendes Pferd bietet. Er wird also an der Ranch gefuettert. Und da er jetzt Mac als Gesellschaft hat, wollten wir Tinkerbelle zur Herde bringen.

Since Nick and I will have to finish quite a few projects by Christmas, we won't be riding horses much. Colt Chester cannot run with the herd right now because the winter grass does not provide a growing horse with enough nutrition. He gets fed at the ranch. And since he has Mac now for company, we wanted to bring Tinkerbelle out to the herd.

Wir nahmen das Quad, aber Tinkerbelle hatte wenig Lust zu folgen. Also schwang sich Nick einfach ohne Sattel aufs Pferd und ritt die Stute mit Halfter zu ihren Artgenossen. Ich fuhr hinterher.

We took the ATV and wanted to pull Tinkerbelle with us but she was not very co-operative. So Nick just jumped on bareback and rode the mare with a halter out to her buddies. I followed on the ATV.

Momentan sind auch Brandy, Emmett und Garrett hier. Brandon muss noch einen Beratungsauftrag in Colorado wahrnehmen, bevor die Familie fuer den Winter nach Montana zieht. Im naechsten Fruehling geht es dann wahrscheinlich wieder nach Sued-Dakota.

Right now Brandy, Emmett and Garrett are on the ranch. Brandon is doing some consulting work in Colorado before the whole family will leave for Montana where they are going to spend the winter. In spring they will probably move to South Dakota again.

Werde wohl nicht allzu viele Blogs schreiben in den naechsten Wochen, denn wen interessiert meine Bueroarbeit? Wer sich mit Huehnern auskennt, darf sich allerdings gern melden: Meine legen keine Eier mehr ... das ist zuvor noch nie passiert (auch nicht waehrend der Mauser). Ein Raetsel ...

Won't post too many blogs in the next few weeks because no one is interested in my office work. But if you know something about chickens, let me know: Ours have stopped laying eggs ... this has never happened before (not even when they where molting). A mystery ...

Mond ueber New Haven / Moon over New Haven

Ein Nachbar rief an: Unsere Pferde waeren ausgerissen und irgendwo auf seinem Land. Ich war allein auf der Ranch und machte mich auf dem Quad bei Minusgraden im Neuschnee auf die Suche. Als ich die eine Haelfte der Herde endlich fand (natuerlich unter der Leitung von Ginger), war es schon zu dunkel zum Fotografieren ... ausserdem musste ich die Tiere davon ueberzeugen, wieder ueber mehrere Weiden zurueck auf unsere Ranch zu laufen. Deshalb anbei nur ein paar Landschaftsfotos ... Ihr koennt Euch kaum vorstellen, wie schoen und still es war, obwohl mir gerade alle Extremitaeten abfroren.

A neighbor called: Our horses had got out and were somewhere on his land. I was alone on the ranch and took the ATV to search for them in fresh new snow and temps below freezing. When I finally found one half of the herd (under Ginger's guidance, of course), it was already too dark to take photos ... I also had enough to do with convincing the animals to move across several pastures back to our ranch. That's why you just get to see landscape pictures ... can you imagine how beautiful and quiet it was? Even though I could hardly feel my feet and hands anymore.

Die andere Haelfte der Herde (wahrscheinlich unter der Leitung von Chica) muss ich heute morgen suchen ... und werde dann auch hoffentlich mal wieder Pferde fotografieren koennen. Fohlen Chester und mein derzeitiges Reitpferd Tinkerbelle stehen an der Ranch und fressen sich mit Heu voll, die anderen Pferde grasen noch ... der Schnee liegt noch nicht allzu hoch.

The other half of the herd (likely under Chica's leadership) I still have to find today. And I will hopefully take some horse pics again. Colt Chester and my riding horse right now, Tinkerbelle, are at the ranch and eating hay while the other horses still graze ... the snow is not that deep, yet.

Ja, bin gerade etwas faul, was den Blog angeht. Aber dieses Foto wollte ich Euch doch noch zeigen: vier heisse Hunde, die sich im Schnee abkuehlen. Sie sind gerade alle ueber die halbe Ranch gerast. Gauge kam etwas spaeter an, ein paar zusaetzliche Pfunde machen ihm gerade zu schaffen, aber das Problem kennen ja auch viele von uns. Billie hingegen - Haut und Knochen trotz ausreichend Futter - waere gern noch ein paar Stunden laenger unterwegs gewesen. Eben kein Genusshund ;-)

Yes, I am a bit lazy about writing my blog right now. But I wanted to show you this picture of four hot dogs which are cooling off in the snow. They had just run across half of the ranch. Gauge arrived a little later due to some additional pounds ... a problem some of us have as well. Billie - skin and bones despite enough feed - would have liked to run a few more hours. He does not know how to enjoy life ;-)

Begehrtes Heu / Sought-after hay

Ich kann es immer noch nicht fassen, dass der Winter bisher so mild geblieben ist ... das kennen wir sonst gar nicht. Der Schnee ist teilweise schon wieder in der Mittagssonne geschmolzen ... aber der See ist aufgrund der kalten Naechte bereits fast zugefroren. Noch koennen wir problemlos die grossen Trucks mit Heu beladen, das Richtung Sueden geht. Die Jaeger und Tom sind nach Hause gefahren, Anke packt ihre Koffer ... ansonsten plaetschert alles so dahin ... keine grossen Hoehepunkte, aber auch kein Stress. Muss mich langsam mit der Steuererklaerung fuer 2011 beschaeftigen, aber das schiebe ich noch etwas auf ;-)

I still cannot believe how mild this winter has been so far ... we aren't used to something like that. The snow has already partly melted in the midday sun ... but the lake's surface is almost frozen due to the cold night. We can still load the big trucks with hay without problems. The hunters and Tom have left for home, Anke is packing her suitcases ... other than that life just goes on ... without peaks but also without stress. Well, I will have to deal with our 2011 tax return soon but right now I am still procrastinating ;-)

Zum vierten Mal Opa / Grandpa for the fourth time

Rob, Bridger, Nikki und/and Lark

Nick ist wieder stolzer Opa geworden. Nach drei Enkelsoehnen ist nun ein Maedchen gekommen: Lark Trinity (der zweite Name nach Nikkis verstorbener Schwester). Bridger wusste schon die ganze Zeit, dass er eine Schwester haben wuerde. Alle sind wohlauf und gluecklich.

Nick has become a proud grandfather again (called Opa in German). After three grandsons it's a girl now: Lark Trinity (the second name after Nikki's dead sister). Bridger had known all along that he would have a sister. Everyone is healthy and happy.

Fruehstueck bei Sonnenaufgang / Breakfast at sunrise

Zwei Tage hat es geschneit, aber jetzt scheint wieder die Sonne, und die Temperaturen steigen. Gut, denn wir wollen eigentlich noch nicht anfangen, die Pferde regelmaessig zu fuettern. Es ist noch viel Gras auf der Ranch.

It snowed for two days but now the sun is shining again and the temps are rising. Good because we don't want to start feeding the horses on a regular basis, yet. There is too much grass left on the ranch.

Unser Heu (um die 13.000 Ballen) haben wir bis auf den Eigenbedarf schon verkauft, zumindest auf dem Papier. Die Kaeufer holen eine Ladung nach der anderen ab und fahren das Heu nach Colorado, wo es diesen Sommer so gut wie nicht geregnet hat.

We already sold all of our hay (about 13,000 bales), at least on paper. The buyers are picking up one semi load after the other and drive the hay to Colorado where it bareley rained all summer. Of course, we keep some hay for our critters.

Die letzten Hirschjaeger - und unser Guide Tom - werden am Mittwoch abreisen, am Donnerstag ist dann das traditionelle Thanksgiving-Fest, bei dem immer Truthahn gegessen wird. Am Freitag muss Anke leider wieder packen, vier Wochen sind wie im Fluge vergangen.

The last deer hunters - and our guide Tom - will leave on Wednesday, Thursday will be Thanksgiving, which is at least as important as Christmas in the US and almost everyone eats turkey. On Friday Anke has to pack again, four weeks have gone by so fast.

Wir warten auf Nachricht, dass Nikkis zweites Kind geboren wurde, aber es laesst noch auf sich warten. Brandy ist mit Emmett und Garrett bei ihrer Schwester und deren Mann, Rob, um zu helfen. Waehrenddessen hat Brandon einen Elk (nicht Elch, sondern einen grossen Hirsch) im Sueden Wyomings geschossen. Wir passen gerade auf Brandys und Brandons Hunde auf, Billie und Luna, die mit Gauge und Penny um all die frischen Hirschknochen streiten.

We are waiting for news that Nikki has born her second child but latter one does not seem to be a hurry. Brandy took Emmett and Garrett and has flown to Nikki to help her and her husband, Rob. In the meantime Brandon shot an elk in Southern Wyoming. We are taking care of Brandy's and Brandon's dogs, Billie and Luna who are fighting with Gauge and Penny for all the fresh deer bones.

Nicks Mutter, JoAnn, hatte diese Tage viel mit ihrem hohen Blutdruck zu kaempfen. Wir haben sie mehrere Male zum Krankenhaus gefahren, was hier ja immer fast zwei Stunden dauert ... da sollte man nicht zu lange warten. Es scheint aber soweit alles okay zu sein, wahrscheinlich muss sie nur neu eingestellt werden. Wir hoffen, dass es ihr bald besser geht.

Nick's mother, JoAnn, is having problems with her high blood pressure these days. We drove her to the ER several times which takes almost two hours out here ... so one should not wait too long. They could not find anything, she probably just needs new medication and/or a higher dosage. We hope she'll be feeling better soon.

Nein, wir haben nichts von Tav gehoert. Wer ihn kontaktieren will, muss das direkt tun.

Gestern und heute haben wir Nachbarn bei der Rinderarbeit geholfen, und morgen helfen wir einem weiteren Nachbarn. Und das bei ziemlich frostigen Temperaturen. Spass bringt es trotzdem ... und meine Bueroarbeit bleibt wie so oft liegen. Ausserdem wollen wir noch ein paar neue Pferde kaufen, aber das muss bis zum Wochenende warten ...

Yesterday and today we helped neighbors with cattle work and tomorrow we are going to help another neighbor. At pretty frosty temperatures. It's fun nevertheless ... and my office work does not get done ... as usual. We also want to buy some new horses but that has to wait till the weekend ...

Der erste Schnee / The first snow

Der erste Schnee blieb nicht allzu lange liegen, aber an seinem Geburtstag wurde Emmett trotzdem von Opa (Nick) und Poncho im Schlitten gezogen. Danach gab es Geburtstagsessen bei Grandma Jo (Nicks Mutter). Morgen fahren Nick und ich in die Stadt, um endlich mal wieder in seinem Lieblingsbaumarkt einzukaufen: Material fuer die Teacher Cabin, die er diesen Winter fertig bauen will.

The first snow did not stay too long but on his birthday, Opa (Nick) and Poncho pulled Emmett on his sled. After that it was birthday lunch at Grandma Jo's (Nick's mother). Tomorrow Nick and I will drive to town to go shopping in Nick's favorite home improvement store: material for the Teacher Cabin which Nick wants to rebuild this winter.

Uebrigens: Im Juni und September 2012 wird es langsam voll. Wer denn kommen will, sollte sich moeglichst bald melden. Die Woche ab 4. Juli ist ausgebucht, aber ansonsten ist im Juli und August noch relativ viel frei.

By the way: June and September of 2012 are getting full. If you want to come then, let us know soon. The week of July 4 is booked out but other than that July and August are still pretty open.

Die Temperaturen sinken rapide ... der erste Blizzard dieses Winters ist im Anmarsch. Immerhin: Wir haben bisher mit dem Wetter in diesem Herbst Glueck gehabt.

The temperature is dropping fast ... the first blizzard of this winter is approaching. We have had luck with the fall weather so far.

Gestern habe ich Tav und Romina zur Stadt gefahren: Tav hat den Bus Richtung Ostkueste genommen, um Familie zu besuchen, und hat uns Penny hier gelassen. Romina ist in den Flieger Richtung Deutschland gestiegen. Jetzt sind nur noch Nick, Anke, Tom und ich auf der Ranch ... und stetig wechselnde Jaegergruppen.

Yesterday I drove Tav and Romina to town: Tav took a bus to the East Coast to visit family and left Penny here. Romina took the plane back to Germany. Now it's just Nick, Anke, Tom and I on the ranch ... and changing groups of hunters.

Brandy und ihre Familie sind da, um morgen Emmetts 5. Geburtstag mit uns zu feiern. Und am Montag haben Nick und ich 5. Hochzeitstag ... wow!

Brandy and her family are here to celebrate Emmett's 5th birthday with us tomorrow. And on Monday Nick and I will have our 5th anniversary ... wow!

Sonntag war einer dieser herrlichen Herbsttage in Wyoming. Romina, Anke (die am Donnerstag angekommen ist) und ich ritten raus, um die Pferde von der Winterweide zu holen und entwurmen. Ausserdem mussten wir unsere kleine Herde Kuehe von einer Koppel zur anderen treiben: Bueffel Daisy, Beefalo Bernadette, die drei Corrientes, Angusdamen Whitie und Anabel mit ihren Kaelbern.

Sunday was one of the gorgeous fall days in Wyoming. Romina, Anke (who arrived Thursday) and I rode out to get the horses from the winter pasture to worm them. Nick helped on the motorcycle. We also had to move our small band of cows to another pasture: buffalo Daisy, beefalo Bernadette, the three Corrientes, Angus ladies Whitie amd Anabel with their calves.

Romina macht weiterhin Fortschritte mit Savannah, Anke hat sich in Jazz verliebt, und ich bin Frost geritten.

Romina is still making progress with Savannah, Anke fell in love with Jazz and I rode Frost.

Nick, Tav und Romina arbeiten an der Lehrerhuette, dem letzten Haus in der Geisterstadt, das noch wiederaufgebaut werden muss.

Hier auf dem Lande bekommen wir von Halloween nichts mit, aber Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett waren unterwegs. Nicks Mutter, JoAnn, ist 78 geworden. Und dann hat heute die Hirschjagdsaison begonnen, Anke und ich haben den ganzen Tag geputzt und gekocht. Unser Guide Tom ist angereist und hofft wieder auf einen Bergloewen wie im vergangenen Jahr.

Here in the country we sort of missed Halloween but Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett went trick'n treating. Nick's mother, JoAnn, became 78. And today the deer hunting season started. Anke and I cleaned and cooked all day. Our guide Tom arrived and is hoping for a mountain lion again like last year.

Es waren einmal vier junge huebsche intelligente erfolgreiche Frauen aus Deutschland und der Schweiz. Sie hatten das perfekte Leben ... bis sie Ranchurlaub in Wyoming machten. Jetzt traeumen sie nur noch von Cowboys, Rindern ... und Traktoren. Und wenn sie Weihnachtskekse backen, sehen die komischerweise wie das Wyoming Bucking Horse aus. Oh je ... Mein Tipp: Maedels, meldet Euch bei "Bauer sucht Frau"! Leider gibt es diese Sendung noch nicht in den USA (soweit ich weiss, da wir keinen Fernsehempfang haben).

Once upon a time there were four young pretty intelligent successful women from Germany and Switzerland. They had a perfect life ... till they went on a ranch vacation in Wyoming. Now they only dream of cowboys, cattle ... and tractors. And when they bake Christmas cookies, latter ones look like the Wyoming bucking horse. Oh dear ... My advice: Girls, apply for (the German TV show) "Rancher looking for wife"! Unfortunately, they don't have this show in the US, yet (as far as I know since we don't have TV reception).

Romina, Savannah und Rinder / Romnina, Savannah and cattle

Gestern haben Nick, Tav, Romina und ich unserem Nachbarn Ken bei der Rinderarbeit geholfen. Wir mussten ca. 200 Kuehe und Kaelber in einer riesigen (ca. 1000 Hektar grossen) und unwegsamen Koppel finden und in einen Korral treiben, um sie dort zu sortieren. Mit dabei waren auch Wes und Andrea, die gerade geheiratet haben, sowie Russ und Jeremiah. Ein langer Tag in herrlichem Herbstwetter, der erst nach Einruch der Dunkelheit endete.

Yesterday Nick, Tav, Romina and I helped our neighbor Ken with cattle work. We had to find about 200 cows and calves in a huge (about 3000 acres) and difficult pasture and move them into a corral to sort them. Wes and Andrea who just got married and Russ and Jeremiah were there as well. A long day with beautiful fall weather which ended long after dark.

Vor ca. einer Woche haben wir unsere letzten Rinder verladen, die Kuehe gehen - zusammen mit einigen weiblichen Kaelbern, die alte und kranke Kuehe ersetzen sollen - auf die Winterweide, wo sie mit Heu gefuettert werden und dann ab Februar ihre Kaelber bekommen. Die anderen Kaelber werden in Feedlots gefahren, wo sie den Winter ueber gemaestet werden. Im Sommer kommen sie dann als Jaehrlinge wieder auf die Weide und werden erst als Zweijaehrige im darauffolgenden Winter geschlachtet.

About a weak ago we shipped our last cattle. The cows - plus some female calves who will replace old and sick cows - will go onto winter pasture where they are fed with hay and have new calves from February on. Most of this year's calves will be driven to feedlots where they are fed all winter. In sommer they get back on pasture as yearlings and won't be butchered before the next winter when they are almost two years old.

Savannah macht sich gut, Romina reitet sie auch viel allein, was der kleinen Stute gut bekommt. Ich reite momentan Jazz, die nach einer Verletzung laenger nicht geritten wurde und nun etwas frisch ist. Stellas Hufe sind immer noch empfindlich, die Eisen sind runter, ich warte nun auf etwas Niederschlag, so dass ich sie wieder auf weicherem Boden reiten kann. Tav kommt langsam mit seiner neuen Stute voran, und Nick investiert Zeit, um Frost zu trainieren. Der kleine Chester ist auch auf der Ranch geblieben, alle anderen Pferde sind auf Winterweide.

Savannah is doing well, Romina is riding her alone a lot and the little mare is getting better and better. I am riding Jazz who hadn't been ridden for quite a while after an injury and is now a little fresh. Stella's hooves are still sensitive, the shoes are off and I am waiting for some precipitation so I can ride her on softer ground. Tav is working with his new mare regularly and Nick invests time into training Frost. Little Chester is on the ranch as well, all other horses are on winter pasture.

Nick, Tav und Romina haben das Dach ueber unserem Schlafzimmer neu gedeckt, weil es dort hineinregnete. Naechstes Jahr muss das ganze Dach neu gedeckt werden, wir haben dieses Jahr keinen Dachdecker finden koennen, und Nick hat nicht genug Zeit dafuer. Ausserdem werden zwei neue Reservoirs gebaut, um mehr Wasserstellen fuer Kuehe zu haben. Darueberhinaus muessen Zaeune und Korrals repariert werden. Naechste Woche soll es langsam richtig kalt werden ... wir muessen Gebaeude und Wassertanks winterfest machen. Und dann beginnt auch schon die Hirschjagdsaison.

Nick, Tav and Romina replaced the roof above our bed room because it has been leaking. Next year we will have to redo the whole roof, we could not find a roofer this year and Nick does not have enough time. We are also building two new reservoirs to have more watering places for cows. And we need to fix fences and corrals. Next week it is supposed to get really cold ... we still have to winterize buildings and water tanks. And then the deer hunting season will start.

Im Herbst ist die Luft klarer denn je. Nachdem die Reitsaison 2011 zu Ende gegangen ist (und ich noch im letzten Moment unsere Steuererklaerung 2010 abgegeben habe), fuhren Sandra und ich mit Pep und Jazz zur Nachbarranch, um dort mit Heike und zwei Ranchgaesten auszureiten. Dann musste nach drei Monaten in Wyoming auch Sandra abreisen ... wie alle mit Traenen in den Augen ... Wyoming hat Suchtfaktor, zumindest fuer diejenigen, die Pferde, Natur und handfeste Arbeit lieben. Wer mit dem Wyoming-Virus infiziert wurde, der findet nur schwer wieder heim.

In fall the air is clearer than ever. After the 2011 riding season ended (and I finally finished the 2010 income tax return), Sandra and I trailered Pep and Jazz over to the neighboring ranch to go riding with Heike and some other ranch guests. Then Sandra - after almost three months - Sandra had to leave for Germany ... with tears in her eyes like everyone else ... Wyoming is like an addiction, at least for everyone who loves horses, nature and hadns-on work. Once you catch the Wyoming virus, you have a hard time going home.

Fuer die naechsten drei Wochen wird Romina uns bei der Arbeit helfen. Ansonsten sind nur noch Nick, Tav und ich auf der Ranch, es ist sehr ruhig geworden ... wenn man nicht gerade Tav beim Singen zuhoert, was eh nicht empfehlenswert ist ;-) Wir haben weiter viel zu tun, darueber mehr in den naechsten Blogs.

Romina is helping us with our work during the next three weeks. Other than her, there are only Nick, Tav and I left on the ranch. It has become quiet ... if you don't listen to Tav sing which might hurt your ears ;-) We are still quite busy, more about that in the next blogs.

Mittlerweile ist auch das Wetter wieder schoen, wenn auch kuehl. Tav und Sandra frieren sich was ab, aber mir gefaellt es so bestens. Traurige Nachricht: Leider hat ein Hund (nein, nicht Gauge oder Penny) unseren weissen Ziegenbock getoetet ... nun weiss ich nicht, was ich mit dem braunen Zicklein tun soll ...

Ich habe genug Fotos fuer die naechsten paar Wochen. Da ich aber noch die Steuererklaerung fuer 2010 fertig machen muss, komme ich nur nach und nach zum Bearbeiten. Die Reitsaison geht ihrem Ende zu, der Herbst beginnt mit kaltem, stuermischem, nassem Wetter.

I have plenty of photos for the next few weeks. But I won't get to edit them that soon because I still have to do our 2010 tax return. The riding season is almost over, fall has begun with cold, stormy and wet weather.

Anbei ein paar Tierfotos, die Kat gemacht hat. Nur die Klapperschlange hat sie verpasst, die ihr Pferd erschreckt hat, so dass es scheute und Kat in hohem Bogen in die Praerie schleuderte. Aber wahre Cowgirls wie Kat ficht das nicht an. Am naechsten Tag musste sie dann einen anderen Gast ins Krankenhaus begleiten. Nein, das Pferd war nicht Schuld. Die Reiterin war einfach nicht sattelfest genug, verlor den Stiegbuegel, fiel ... und brach sich leider die Schulter. Vielleicht sollte ich das nicht im Blog schreiben, aber das ist eben auch der Wilde Westen ...

Attached a few animal pics which Kat took. She just missed the rattle snake which scared her horse which then spooked and threw Kat onto the prairie grass. But real cowgirls like Kat go on with life. The next day she had to accompany another guest to the hospital. No, it was not the horse's fault. The rider just wasn't very good, yet, lost her stirrup, fell ... and unfortunately broke her shoulder. Maybe I should not mention that in the blog but it is part of life in the Wild West ...

Pferd mit Ausblick / Horse with a view

In dieser Woche folgte ein Viehtrieb dem naechsten. Heute waren wir in der wunderschoenen Landschaft am Belle Fourche River unterwegs ... und das wieder bei Temperaturen von fast 30 Grad. Oben seht Ihr einen Blick von Frost aus, den ich heute ritt, da Stellas Eisen locker sind. Da wir spaet dran waren, haben wir auf dem Rueckweg in Hulett gehalten und in der Ponderosa Bar Burger und Steaks gegessen. Mehr Infos am kommenden Wochenende.

This week one cattle drive followed another. Today we were riding the beautiful landscape at the Belle Fourche River ... and at temperatures of over 80 degrees again. Above you see the view from Frost who I rode today because Stella's shoes are loose. Since it was getting late, we stopped in Hulett on the way back and ate burgers and steak at the Ponderosa Bar. A few years ago I helped Steffi find a job on a neighboring ranch. Once there, she fell in love with Justin, who worked as a hunting guide then. The two have been married for two years now and live in Nevada. This September they finally came to visit again (here with Vegas and Tucker).

Gestern hatte ich einen Tag eingeplant, um Bueroarbeit zu erledigen und einen neuen Blog zu schreiben, aber wie immer kam es anders als geplant. Sandra fiel im hinterletzten Canyon von Pearl ... ich brauchte drei Stunden im Truck, um in ihre Naehe zu kommen, aber die letzten paar hundert Meter musste sie dann doch noch laufen. Dann nach Spearfish ins Krankenhaus und warten ... eine gebrochene Rippe, das tut weh. Um Mitternacht waren wir dann wieder zu Hause. Zum Glueck ist Doris hier, die aushelfen kann. Sandra denkt schon wieder ans Reiten, aber weder Tav noch ich werden ihr beim Satteln und Aufsteigen helfen ... jetzt ist erstmal eine Zwangspause faellig.

Yesterday I had planned to spend the day in the office and write a new blog but as usual things never happen as planned out here. Sandra fell off Pearl in the middle of nowhere ... it took me three hours in the truck to get there and she still had to walk a few hundred yards. Then to Spearfish and the ER and waiting ... a broken rib, that hurts. We were home at midnight. Luckily Doris is here to help out. Sandra already plans on riding again but neither Tav nor I will help her with saddling and mounting ... she needs a break.

Dann bin ich im Van auch noch mit einer Antilope kollidiert, und Nick ist mit dem alten Chevy im hohen Gras ueber einen Baumstumpf gefahren ... bleiben uns zurzeit nur noch der neue GMC, der Ford und der alte GMC, den wir aber nur noch auf der Ranch fahren duerfen.

Then I collided with an antelope while driving the van and Nick drove the old Chevy over a tree stump in high grass ... now we only have the new GMC, the Ford and the old GMC left, latter one we are only allowed to drive on the ranch.

Jetzt werde ich mich mal an die Fotos fuer den naechsten Blog machen ...

Viel zu erzaehlen, aber keine Zeit. Anbei nur schnell ein Foto von unserem neuen Baby, Chester (hier mit Tav). Nick hat den 3 Monate alten Kastanienfuchs ganz spontan auf einer Auktion gekauft. Er ist gross fuer sein Alter und supersuess!

Heute sind alle auf dem Weg nach Hulett (30 Kilometer) fuer die karitative Aktion "Ride a horse, feed a cowboy!" Nick und ich werden abends mit Haengern in die Stadt fahren, um die Pferde abzuholen, waehrend die wackeren Reiter sich in der Ponderosa Bar staerken.

Today everyone is riding to Hulett (18 miles) for the charity event "Ride a horse, feed a cowboy!". Nick and I will drive to town tonite with trailers to pick up the horses while the mighty riders fortify themselves at the Ponderosa Bar.

Besser spaet als nie / Better late than never

Ja, wir leben noch. Ich hatte – gerade im Sommer – schon immer genug zu tun. Seit unsere Koechin abgereist ist, hat der Tag trotz Sandras toller Hilfe nicht mehr ausreichend Stunden. Und ja, man sollte es nicht glauben, aber es ist nicht einfach, mitten in der Saison eine gute Koechin zu finden ... nicht in Wyoming, wo es mehr Rinder und Schafe als Menschen gibt.

Yes, we are still alive. I always had enough to do – especially in summer. But since our cook left, the day does not have enough hours anymore, despite Sandra’s great help. And yes, it’s hard to believe but it is not easy to find a good cook in the middle of the season … not in Wyoming where there are more cattle and sheep than people.

Also, wer Lust und Zeit hat (ab sofort bis ca. Mitte Oktober), beim Kochen zu helfen (ein bisschen Talent sollte allerdings vorhanden sein), darf sich melden ... auch aus Europa.

So, if you have the mind and time (from now till mid October) to help me cook (you should have some talent), let me know ... also if you are living in Europe.

So oder so werde ich mindestens einen Blog pro Woche online stellen, aber wahrscheinlich nicht mehr.

One way or the other, I will put at least one blog online per week but probably not more.

Silke ist kaum angekommen, da war sie auch schon wieder weg. Wir hatten nicht genuegend Zeit, um sie zu verheiraten ... die gute Frau war immer am Zaeunebauen. Aber wir sehen uns wieder. Gestern hat Therese Nick geholfen, heute Anne ... ich kann mich ja zum Glueck druecken, da ich kochen muss ;-)

Silke had barely arrived when she had to leave again. We did not have enough time to marry her away … the woman was fencing all the time. But we’ll see her again. Yesterday, Therese helped Nick with fencing, today Anne … I can luckily say I am too busy with cooking ;-)

Tav ist wie das Energizer Bunny und sitzt weiterhin jeden Tag im Sattel ... sweet 26!

Und dann hatten wir die interessantesten Berufsgruppen hier: Chiropraktiker, Physiotherapeut, Tierarzthelferin (danke fuer die Hilfe an Mensch und Tier), Richter, Dramaturgin, Kriminalkommissarin, Pharmareferentin, Stewardess, Anwaeltin, Sinologin, Antikwaffenhaendler, Kranfuehrer und und und.

And then we had the most interesting professions here: chiropractic, physiotherapist, vet tec (thanks for the help for humans and animals), judge, director, detective, pharmeceutical representative, lawyer, china expert, antique rifle dealer, crane operator and and and.

Unsere Ziegen Bonny und Clyde tragen jetzt Hundeschockhalsbaender ... keine Sorge, sie sind so schlau, dass sie sicher innerhalb weniger Tage gelernt haben werden, nicht mehr auf die Whirlpoolabdeckung, auf die Autos oder in den Futtersack zu steigen ... meine Schafe waren gleich brav, da brauchte es kein spezielles Training.

Our goats, Bonny and Clyde, now wear dog shock collars ... don’t worry, they are so smart they will certainly learn fast not to sleep on top of the hot tub anymore, jump onto the cars or into the feed bag … my sheep were always well behaved, I never needed to train them.

Und dann hat mich auch noch meine Freundin Susan aus Bozeman, Montana besucht.

Oh, and my friend Susan from Bozeman, Montana visited as well.

Nick und ich werden nun uebrigens erst im kommenden Februar nach Deutschland kommen, zum 70. Geburtstag meiner Mutter.

By the way, Nick and I will not go to Germany in October but in February, for my mother’s 70th birthday.

Hier bricht unser Team zu einem 6-stuendigen Ritt auf ... Kueher und Kaelber auf eine andere Koppel bringen, kranke Tiere ropen und verarzten, kaempfende Bullen aussortieren und zur Ranch treiben etc. Mit dabei: Nick auf Tinkerbelle, Tav auf Whiskey, Michael auf Pink, Kathrin auf Tramp, Kirstin auf Newt, Julia auf Buster, Sarah auf Juno, Joachim auf Patch, Susanne auf Pep, Silke auf Smokey und Sandra auf Pearl.

Here our team is leaving for a 6-hour ride ... moving cows and calves to another pasture, roping sick animals and doctoring them, sorting fighting bulls and moving them back to the ranch etc. The team: Nick on Tinkerbelle, Tav on Whiskey, Michael on Pink, Kathrin on Tramp, Kirstin on Newt, Julia on Buster, Sarah on Juno, Joachim on Patch, Susanne on Pep, Silke on Smokey and Sandra on Pearl.

Heute steht Team Penning an, und danach geht es zum Devils Tower und zur Ponderosa Bar in Hulett. Die Sturgis Motorrad-Ralley hat begonnen, ueberall brausen Harley Davidsons ueber die Strassen. Johann und Johanna geniessen noch eine Woche in den Black Hills, Lisa ist wieder in Deutschland angekommen. Mehr Fotos morgen.

Menschen und Pferde / Humans and horses

In der vergangenen Woche waren die "Frauen des Westens" zu Besuch, eine Gruppe von Muettern, Toechtern, Grossmuettern, Enkelinnen und Freundinnen. Maureen, Mary, Kim, Caren, Ryan, Ann und Jane sind viel geritten, haben zusammen mit Barbara, Linda und Lisa an einem ganztaegigen Fotoshooting mit Les teilgenommen (hoffentlich kann ich bald ein paar Fotos zeigen) und waren einen Tag Sightseeing mit Rodeo im historischen Deadwood.

Last week the "Women of the West" were visiting, a group of mothers and daughters, grand mothers and grand daughters, and friends. Maureen, Mary, Kim, Caren, Ryan, Ann and Jane rode a lot, participated - with Barbara, Linda and Lisa - in the one-day photo shooting with Les (hopefully I can show some pics soon) and went sightseeing with a rodeo in historic Deadwood.

Waehrend Sandra sich schon eingelebt hat, mussten Barbara und Linda nach Hause fliegen. Lisa ist am Samstag dran, dafuer kommt dann Silke wieder, die sich irgendwie auch nicht von New Haven trennen kann. Mit dem Heuen sind wir fertig, aber nun muessen neue Reservoirs und Zaeune gebaut werden.

While Sandra has fully arrived, Barbara and Linda had to fly home. Lisa will have to leave on Saturday. She will be replaced by Silke, who can also not let go of New Haven. We are done with haying but now have to build new reservoirs and fences.

Seit Samstag sind Johann, Johanna, Kirstin und Joachim hier. Sie haben sich beim Rindertreiben und -sotieren schon gut bewaehrt und verschwenden nach eigenen Angaben keinen Gedanken mehr an den Stress zu Hause. Der Kopf wird frei, der Hintern tut allerdings weh.

Johann, Johanna, Kirstin and Joachim have arrived on Saturday. They already did good work moving and sorting cattle and have - as they mentioned themselves - left all their stress at home. Their minds relax, their butts hurt.

Leider wird unsere Koechin Dori uns verlassen. Keine Sorge, unsere Gaeste muessen nicht hungern, aber wir suchen nach einer neuen Koechin (kann auch ein Mann sein) fuer August und September, eventuell auch laenger. Meldet Euch!

Unfortunately, our cook Dori is leaving us. Don't worry, our guests still get fed but we are looking for a new cook (woman or man) for August and September, possibly longer. Let us know!

Die Schnellsten der Schnellen / The Fastetst of the Fast

Wir haben viele schnelle Pferde, aber die schnellsten sind wohl Newt, Lady, Pearl, Bailey, Whiskey und Pep. Heute waren vier davon unterwegs und haben sich ein spannendes Rennen geliefert. Tav auf Whiskey hat es nicht geschafft, aber er wiegt auch mehr als die Maedels. Lisa auf Newt haette es schaffen koennen, sie hat sich aber noch ein bisschen Verstand bewahrt, was man von Barbara auf Pearl (im Vordergrund) und Ryan auf Lady nicht behaupten kann :-) Sie waren furchtlos. Die Beiden gingen Kopf an Kopf ueber die Ziellinie ... Pearl mit einer Nasenlaenge Vorsprung.

We have lots of fast horses but the fastest ones are probably Newt, Lady, Pearl, Bailey, Whiskey and Pep. Today four of them were being ridden and ran a great race. Tav on Whiskey did not make it but he is also heavier than the girls. Lisa on Newt could have made it but she kept some of her marbles which one cannot say about Barbara on Pearl (the black horse) and Ryan on Lady :-) They were fearless. The went head to head across the finishing line ... Pearl with a nose length in front.

Was sonst noch geschah: Die einzige Buchhandlung (Borders) in 3 Stunden Umgebung hat dicht gemacht *schluchz* Nicks Schwester DeAnn und Nichte Joy waren aus Texas zu Besuch. Lisa ist immer noch hier und wird noch bis zum 6. August bleiben. Angekommen sind Caren, Maureen, Mary, Kim, Ryan, Jane und Ann ... und natuerlich Sandra ... Fotos folgen.

What else happened: The only book store (Borders) within 3 hours of the ranch has closed *cry* Nick's sister DeAnn and niece Joy were visiting from Texas. Lisa is still here and will stay till August 6. Arrived: Caren, Maureen, Mary, Kim, Ryan, Jane and Ann ... and Sandra, of course ... photos will follow.

Heute lassen sich alle von Les, dem Fotografen, ablichten. Am Montag haben wir Nachbarn bei einem langen Viehtrieb geholfen. Und morgen gehts zum Mount Rushmore und danach zum Rodeo in Deadwood. Nick und ich haben gestern die neue Ranch von Freunden in Sued-Dakota besucht und waren dann tatsaechlich zum zweiten Mal in diesem Jahr im Kino.

Today Les is taking professional photos of everyone. On Monday we helped neighbors moving cattle. And tomorrow we are going to visit Mount Rushmore and then see a rodeo in Deadwood. Nick and I visited the new ranch of friends in South Dakota yesterday. Afterwards we watched a movie in the movie theater - for the second time this year.

Rueckkehr der Zicklein / Return of the goat kids

Oh je! / Oh dear!

Was habe ich mir nur dabei gedacht? Als Brandy ihre beiden Ziegenbabies loswerden wollte, wusste ich doch schon aus langer Erfahrung, dass Ziegen trainingsresistent sind. Aber sie sind auch sooo suess! Jetzt brauchen wir fuer diese Beiden noch Namen (ein Maennlein, ein Weiblein). Nein Dori, nicht Olli und Hilda ... fuer deutsche Ohren hoert sich das seltsam an.

What was I thinking? When Brandy wanted to get rid of her two goat kids, I already knew from experience that goats are resistant to training. But they are also sooo cute! Now the two need names (one male, one female). No Dori, not Olli and Hilda ... for German ears this sounds really strange.

Und schon wieder ist eine Woche um: Abigail, Samantha, Roxane, Urs, Georg, Ruth und Danielle reisen ab. Und bald ist auch Barbaras, Lindas und Lisas Zeit auf New Haven um. Sie werden uns fehlen.

And another week is over: Abigail, Samantha, Roxane, Urs, Georg, Ruth and Danielle will leave. And soon Barbara's, Linda's and Lisa's time on New Haven is over as well. We will miss them.

Vergangene Woche haben wir Nachbarn dabei geholfen, Schafe am Abend zusammenzutreiben, um die Laemmer dann frueh morgens (wegen der Hitze) zu docken. Ein Docking ist ein Branding fuer Schafe. Sie werden mit Farbe markiert, man bindet oder schneidet Schwanz und Hoden ab und impft sie gegen Krankheiten. Bei den maennlichen Schafen wird die Ohrspitze abgeschnitten, weil man sonst spaeter die hodenlosen Boecke nicht mehr ohne weiteres von den Weibchen unterscheiden kann.

Last week we helped neighbors to gather sheep in the evening and dock the lambs early morning (due to the heat). A docking is a branding for sheep. They are paint-branded, one cuts off or bands their tails and nuts and vaccinates them. Male lambs' ear tip is cut off because otherwise it would be very difficult to distinguish between wethers and ewes at first sight.

Meine Schafe haben fast alle einen Schwanz und keine Probleme damit, aber das Risiko einer Wurminfektion etc. ist mit Schwanz groesser. Und bei grossen Herden ist Vorbeugung besser als Nachsorge. Ja, wie beim Branding ist das alles keine positive Erfahrung fuer die Jungtiere, aber in kuerzester Zeit ist alles vorbei, und dann geht es wieder mit Mama auf die Weide.

Most of my sheep have tails and no problem with it but the risk of worm infections etc. is higher with a tail. And when you have a big herd, prevention is better than medication. Yes, like a branding a docking is not a very positive experience for the young animals but everything is over in minutes and then they can join mama on the pasture again.

Echte Indianer auf bunten Ponies / Real Indians on colorful ponies

Am Donnerstag sind wir zum Rodeo nach Sheridan gefahren. Eine Besonderheit dort sind die wilden indianischen Staffelrennen, bei denen Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot und andere Staemme teilnehmen. Tine haette vor Aufregung beinahe einen Herzinfarkt bekommen. Die beruehmte King Saddlery haben wir uns auch angeschaut.

On Thursday we drove to the rodeo in Sheridan. A speciality there are the wild Indian relay races in which Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and other tribes participate. Tine was so excited, she almost had a heart attack. We also visited the famous King Saddlery.

Nachdem ich im vergangenen Jahr viel auf dem Traktor sass, musste ich dieses Jahr noch nicht oft ran. Nick und Barbara kuemmern sich ums Heuen, und Lisa gehoert zum Back-up-Team. Sie hat schon gelernt, den Traktor zu fahren und den Wender zu bedienen. Die ersten 10.000 Ballen sind in der Scheune, die damit (und etwa 2.000 alten Ballen von 2010) voll ist. Jetzt stapelt Nick die Ballen draussen unter Planen.

After I had to run the tractor a lot last year, this year I haven't done much haying, yet. Nick and Barbara do most of it and Lisa is part of the back-up team. She already learned how to drive the tractor and use the rake. The first 10,000 bales are in the barn which (together with 2,000 bales from 2010) is full. Nick is now storing the bales outside under tarps.

Wir werden unsere neue Stute Belle nennen, Tinkerbelle klingt zu sehr nach Fee, aber das Pferd ist ziemlich stabil gebaut. Eines der Schafe hat Drillinge bekommen. Und Ziegenbabies haben wir auch wieder. Alle Pferde sind fit ausser Jazz, die sich bei einem Ritt verletzt hat, aber in ein paar Wochen sicher wieder fit sein wird.

The new mare is now Belle, Tinkerbelle sounds too much like a fairy and the horse is rather stout. One of the ewes had triplets. And we have goat kids again, too. All horses are fit but Jazz who hurt herself during a ride but will be fine again in a few weeks.

Nach Sabine und Sarah sind auch Baerbel, Rahel und Alexandra abgereist und am Samstag Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett und - schluchz - Tine und Antje. Nur Lisa haelt die Stellung. Neu dabei sind Urs aus der Schweiz, Georg und Ruth aus Deutschland, Danielle aus Florida und Roxane, Samantha und Abigail aus Sued-Afrika.

After Sabine and Sarah, Baerbel, Rahel and Alexandra left and on Saturday Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett and *cry* Tine and Antje. Just Lisa is still here. New are Urs from Switzerland, Georg and Ruth from Germany, Danielle from Florida, and Roxane, Samantha and Abigail from South Africa.

Barbara arbeitet gerade mit Vegas (der aufgrund von chronischer Hufrehe lange nicht geritten werden konnte), Smokey und Gordo. Linda hat es in der Zwischenzeit auf Babies abgesehen, jedes Kleinkind, das hier auftaucht, wird in Beschlag genommen (da aehnelt sie Nicks Mutter JoAnn). Taben, die Tochter des Hufschmieds, wollte sogar gleich hier bleiben (s. Foto).

Barbara is working with Vegas (who could not be ridden for a long time due to his chronically foundered left front hoof), Smokey and Gordo. Linda rather gets a hold of babies. She catches every little child that shows up here (in that way she is just like Nick's mom, JoAnn). Taben, the farrier's daughter, did not want to leave anymore (s. photo).

Bei 40 Grad wird das Leben etwas muehsam (Tav und Tine koennen sich nicht mehr ueber die Kaelte beschweren), aber irgendwann muss es ja wieder abkuehlen. Drueckt die Daumen fuer uns!

Life gets tough at close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius) (Tav and Tine cannot complain about the cold weather anymore) but hopefully it will cool down soon. Cross your fingers for us!
